Product Description

Sophisticated Finishes Antiquing Solution for Copper

Patina Blue

4 oz. Bottle

Why wait for months or years for nature to take it's course when you can create a patina on your copper sheet overnight! This is not a faux finish or paint, but a product that will cause a chemical reaction with the copper to product an actual patina.

*** Please note *** This product must be used on copper that is completely free of dust, dirt or oil. If the copper sheet is not completely clean, the product will not work properly or will wash off. The copper sheet can also be scuffed to provide more of a tooth for the product to work. With all but the thinnest of applications, this product will create a dusty residue that may wash or brush off. Without a sealant this dust may get on your clothing, furniture, etc.

Basic Copper cannot be responsible for a project or provide refunds for copper sheet that has been treated with this product. We hope that you achieve the desired result, but note that the results may be unpredictable and depend vastly on the condition of the copper sheet and the amount of the product applied.

Approximate Coverage:

4 oz. bottle: 10 square feet

8 oz. bottle: 20 square feet

16 oz. bottle: 32 square feet

Directions for use:

1) Begin by thoroughly cleaning the copper sheet to remove any dirt, debris, or oily residue. You may want to use a dish washing detergent and small brush (such as an old toothbrush), or for a larger project or an extra dirty copper sheet, you may prefer a more heavy duty detergent such as TSP. Be sure to rinse well with clear water and then blot dry with a clean towel or rag.

2) You may also want to lightly buff the metal to scuff the surface. This can be done using a piece of steel wool.

3) Apply the solution using a paint brush, foam brush or rag in a well ventilated area. Please note that the manufacturer suggests that if you are using the patina blue solution with copper, you may want to water it down by 40%. They state that the patina green solution does not need to be watered down unless you are getting a result that is blackish, brownish, or if flakes are developing on the surface.

4) You may choose to apply one heavy coat or several light coats. The latter may take more time, but it will give you a little more control over the developing patina.

5) Allow the solution to oxidate and develop the patina. This will begin immediately but could take up to 3 days for the patina’s full color to develop.

6) It is not necessary to apply a sealant on top of the patina. Even in an outdoor environment the patina will not usually wash or wear off. A patina is, in fact, a protection for the copper and will make the sheet essentially weatherproof. In some cases, however, you may wish to apply a sealant as a protection of the look you have achieved. Keep in mind that the application of the sealant will affect the texture and appearance, so you will definitely want to apply this on small area as a test before completely covering your project. The manufacturer recommends using a high quality, solvent- based (non-urethane based) sealant as the salts and acids in the patina may cloud or break down the urethane.

Additional Note about using this product:

Always do a small test sample to be sure you are going to like the results. We are happy to provide upon request, a small scrap (aprx 3”) piece of copper sheet with your order for that purpose. Please keep in mind that we cannot guarantee any particular result from this product or offer refunds or returns of copper sheet that has been altered in any way.

It is best to apply the patina solution to your completed project. Working with the copper may cause changes in the look you have achieved so create your art first, and then apply the patina.
